RFA Talk > trying to understand the program
Sorry for the typos!
HI Emily,
Welcome to our site! You are the second person this week to post from Australia. WOW!
RFA only has one requirement for membership: the desire to abstain from eating sugar, flour and wheat.
If you are familiiar with the BIg Book of Alcoholics Anonymous though, you know that in order to live a life of sane and happy usefulness, more than physical abstinence is required. We believe that without working the 12 Steps, we will go back to the food.
The 12 Steps are the only method in my experience that have caused the huge displacement of ideas and attitudes and subsequent replacement that is necessary to have a profoundly different reaction to life. Besides physical abstinence from sugar, flour and wheat, I have to do enough spiritual work on a daily basis to continue to grow spirituallly. Someitmes it's a little, sometimes it's a LOT! The longer I"m here, the more willing I am to do more and more, which is good because I find that's what is required for me, not by my sponsor or RFA, but by my disease which is progressive and fatal.

Hi, I've been in another 12 step program for 26 years now for a non food related addiction and wish to get a healthy recovery from food addiction. I have attended another food addiction program which I had some success in but found extremely corrective. Although I saw much good in this food program I couldn't found the amount of daily requirements quite punishing,
I am trying to understand the differences in this food addiction program. I am happy to give up flour sugar and wheat a day at a time and attend meetings, ( though I am in Australia so this may be hard) I also well understand the need for a sponsor, the gift pf service and the iimportance of reaching out with calls but can someone explain how much is required of me on a daily basis please?
If there are other requirements I have missed please let me know.
I have my fingers crossed!
Emily
